The question to carry into this week's staff meeting
Think of someone who has sat in your room faithfully for two years and never joined anything smaller. If they quietly stopped coming this month, how long before someone noticed, and who would that someone be?
Attendance tells you a person was present. Only a smaller room tells you they are known.
The service inspires it. The small room is where it sticks.
Lifeway released a new cut of its State of Discipleship study Tuesday. Churchgoers who attend a small group Bible study five or more times a month score 74.1 on its discipleship assessment. Those in no group at all score 60.4. The gap widens where a pastor feels it: churchgoers outside a group have invited someone to church 1.4 times in six months, against 7.6 for regular group members, and only 16% carry any regular responsibility at their church, against 48%.
Lifeway's Ken Braddy puts it plainly: "worship services inspire discipleship, but small groups personalize it." Scott McConnell adds the honest caution, that "a perfect attendance record does not indicate a perfect disciple."
